It all started with a little toy figurine Stefan discovered in Sarah\u2019s webstore nearly a decade ago and a simple inquiry to let it get wrapped as carefully as possible for its nearly 4000 mile long journey from the U.S.\/Rhode Island all the way to Europe\/Austria. Shortly upon arrival the until then rather formal conversation had a curious and unexpected turning point when both Sarah and Stefan realized their shared fascination for exploring and reading through any kind of exotic newspaper pages. Those papers which are viewed as ordinary to anyone who sees them regularly, and which are thoughtlessly used as a stuffing material in packages. To Stefan and Sarah, however, these pages were a glimpse into an unknown world, the mundane becoming extraordinary. It was this \u201cAha moment\u201d that initially brought up the shy question if becoming long-distance, old-fashioned penpals might be a nice idea \u2013 something which ultimately led them to not only a poetic and creative long-term and long-distance friendship but also to their \u201cPhotografIn: Two Worlds\u201d photography-project.

Alles begann vor ungef\u00e4hr 10 Jahren mit einer Actionfigur, die Stefan in Sarahs Ebay-Store erwarb und mit einer pers\u00f6nlichen Bitte, diese bestm\u00f6glich zu verpacken, damit diese die knapp 6000 Kilometer lange Reise von den Vereinigten Staaten\/Rhode Island bis nach \u00d6sterreich\/Europa bestm\u00f6glich \u00fcbersteht. Nach Eintreffen des Pakets und der dankend-weitergereichten Info, dass die Figur tats\u00e4chlich heil in \u00dcbersee angekommen ist, nimmt die bisher eher f\u00f6rmliche Kommunikation eine unerwartete Wendung – als sich n\u00e4mlich herausstellt, dass sowohl Sarah als auch Stefan eine Faszination f\u00fcr das Lesen und Durchforsten ausl\u00e4ndischer Zeitungsseiten haben teilen, die in Paketen ohne gro\u00dfe \u00dcberlegung als ordin\u00e4res Auspolsterungsmaterial verwendet werden. F\u00fcr beide sind solche Seiten ein aufregendes Fenster, einen Blick in fremde L\u00e4nder, Kulturen und Kaufgewohnheiten zu werfen und somit das Banale urpl\u00f6tzlich zu etwas besonders Aufregenden wird. Es war genau dieser kleine “Aha-Moment”, der im Gespr\u00e4ch die sch\u00fcchterne Frage aufkommen lie\u00df, ob es nicht eine nette Idee w\u00e4re, daraus eine Brieffreundschaft “nach alter Schule” zu machen. Genau diese entwickelt sich \u00fcber die Jahre hinweg in eine zunehmends kreative und poetische Richtung und letzten Endes auch zur Schaffung des “Fotograph*in: Two Worlds” Blog-Projekts.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name “Photograf\/in” is a linguistic hodgepodge between the English noun Photographer and “Fotograf” – which is the German word for the same profession in its female form, ending with an -in. On the one hand the meaning and purpose of the project circles around unearthing, showing and also learning about all the differences, similarities and the pure beauty of all little and ordinary things in those two worlds: the United States (Rhode Island) and Europe (Austria) – or respectively in a more historical framing: the so called “New World” and the “Old World”. On the other hand “Photograf\/in: Two Worlds” is simply a good exercise and opportunity for Stefan and Sarah to become creative and share all of the aforefemtioned things with each other and the visitors of that blog.

Der Name “Photograf*in” ist eine bewusst gew\u00e4hlte Wortmischung aus dem neutral-englischen Hauptwort “photographer” und dem deutschen Gegenst\u00fcck in seiner weiblichen Form: der Fotografin. Die beiden Hauptideen hinter dem Blog-Projekt sind einerseits das Auffinden und Herzeigen der Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten in der Sch\u00f6nheit der (kleinen und gro\u00dfen) Dinge “beider Welten”: den Vereinigten Staaten (Rhode Island) und Europa (\u00d6sterreich) oder in historischerer Nomenklatur: der “neuen Welt” und der “alten Welt”. Die zweite Hauptidee dahinter ist au\u00dferdem, dass das Projekt f\u00fcr Stefan und Sarah ein gemeinsamer und guter Grund ist, sich spontan in der eigenen Kreativit\u00e4t zu \u00fcben und sich gegenseitig (bzw. den BesucherInnen dieses Blogs) obengenannte Dinge zu pr\u00e4sentieren. <\/i> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rules are quite simple: on alternating Saturdays, Stefan and Sarah are to take a photo which will be used for the blog. Otherwise, anything goes. Any time of the day or night, any camera, and any subject are welcome. The point is not to constrict or confine, but to embrace the spontaneity of the day and the unique experiences that arise.

Die selbstauferlegten Regeln f\u00fcr das F\u00fchren des Blogs sind dabei sehr \u00fcberschaubar: abwechselnd, jeweils an Samstagen, nehmen Stefan und Sarah ein Bild auf, das in dieses Blog eingespeist wird. Dabei sind der Kreativit\u00e4t keine Grenzen gesetzt, es ist alles erlaubt. Jede Tageszeit – am Tag, in der Nacht – jegliches “bildschaffende” Ger\u00e4t darf verwendet werden, jedes Thema und jedes Motiv ist willkommen. Der springende Punkt ist, zu lernen, sich kreativ nicht einzuschr\u00e4nken und die allt\u00e4glichen Scheuklappen, mit der durch die Welt gegangen wird, abzulegen. Es soll die Spontanit\u00e4t des Moments gepflegt werden, mit dem Ziel, einzigartige Momente aufkommen zu lassen. <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah is a lover of all things art and eastern philosophy. Photography has always been a part of her life, from a childhood spent behind the scenes of a camera store, to a growing passion for digital, analogue, and alternative photography processes. She believes in the power of the quiet moments of life, in the peace and stillness that can be found in the Now, and much of her work is focused on this ideology.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah ist eine Bewunderin jeglicher k\u00fcnstlerischer Bereiche und \u00f6stlicher Philsophie. Fotografie war dabei immer ein Teil ihres Lebens. Ausgehend von ihrer Kindheit, in der sie viel Zeit in einem Kameragesch\u00e4ft verbrachte, wuchs ihre Leidenschaft f\u00fcr digitale, analoge und alternative Fotografie stetig. Sie glaubt an die stillen Momente im Leben, an die friedvollen Nuancen und die Ruhe, die im Hier und Jetzt gefunden werden k\u00f6nnen. Ein wesentlicher Teil ihrer Arbeit basiert dabei auf ebendieser Ideologie.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stefan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stefan is the big kid that\u2019s still sitting childishly in the vast sandbox of practiced photography. Albeit his early relationship with photography in general was a rather ambivalent one he has finally found his creative pulse by celebrating the ease, spontaneity and freedom of a fully digital workflow. Coming from that kind of background he is very sensitive to two main paradigms in his work: to respectfully touch the human side of his photo motifs and to maintain and preserve a certain light-hearted, explorative and dudeistic approach to photography.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stefan ist “das gro\u00dfe Kind”, das noch immer verspielt in der riesengro\u00dfen “Sandkiste der Fotografie” sitzt. Auch wenn seine anf\u00e4ngliche Beziehung zur Fotografie sehr ambivalent war, hat er zwischenzeitlich eine seiner kreativen Quellen im Aus\u00fcben der Digitalfotografie, ihrer Spontanit\u00e4t, Gn\u00e4digkeit und Freiheit, gefunden. <\/em>Davon ausgehend, haben sich f\u00fcr ihn zwei sehr sensible Hauptparadigmen in seiner Fotoarbeit entwickelt: das Entdecken der menschlichen Seite seiner Motive, diese respektvoll und mit W\u00fcrde nach au\u00dfen zu tragen und dabei stets eine gewisse Leichtherzigkeit, Entdeckertum und einen dudeistischen Zugang zu hegen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
